Once upon a time in the late 1990’s, a young child with autism in Atlanta, Georgia first became a baseball fan after watching games on a local television channel and playing a Windows 98 computer game starring kids of all different personalities playing baseball on a blacktop or in some kid’s backyard. Because of his autism diagnosis, it was hard to find a place to play baseball in his home area. Therefore, the accessibility of the sport through free over-the-air channels became one of the only ways he could still participate in the fandom of America’s Pastime.
Years later, now a preteen, he played for a year on a local recreation baseball team and the team lost nearly all the games. Despite the losses, he learned through the highs, lows, successes, and disappointments the life skills needed to carry him into the future. That preteen became a young man, Taylor Duncan, who founded ALTERNATIVE BASEBALL to provide the life skills of teamwork and character to other teens and adults with autism and other disabilities. Why? Because they too deserve a chance to learn and grow through the fun of #OurPastime.
ABO SUPERSTATION was started in 2026 in the spirit and style of the over-the-air baseball broadcasts that made his hometown team known worldwide from the 1980’s to the mid-2000’s as “America’s Team.”
Through the years, baseball in itself, for casual viewers, has noticeably become a harder sport to follow and watch games. Between rising ticket prices and the removal of cash tenders at stadiums, expensive cable and mounting streaming packages, rule changes from New York that fundamentally altered the experience, and the rise of an influencer culture shaped by a higher emphasis on pomp, circumstance, entertainment, and competition (for better or worse). Baseball has also become significantly more expensive for youth and adults to participate in, with some equipment often costing hundreds of dollars. Not to say competitive avenues are terrible, but that's not the only avenue that should exist.
It could be argued that the sport of baseball, in its traditional form, has become LESS accessible despite the introduction of more platforms throughout the 21st Century. ABO Superstation is about showcasing the talents of athletes with disabilities from the Alternative Baseball licensed programs across America on a worldwide platform offered for people to watch and support free-of-charge just like in the analog broadcast era.
You’ll see athletes of all abilities and skill levels. In Alternative Baseball, winning or losing as a player doesn’t define who you are. The grit, the teamwork, the mentorship, and the life lessons gained is what matters. On ABO SUPERSTATION, you’ll see full-length games following traditional baseball rules in the spirit of the Sandlot; starring ABO athletes, local community leaders/’celebrities’, and sometimes even former professional baseball players. Sometimes, these former pros may also give advice on how baseball has helped them navigate the challenges of life off the diamond.
ABO SUPERSTATION broadcasts utilize original soundtracks from before and during the 1980’s and 1990’s and utilizes home video technology (audio cassettes and VHS tapes) in the productions.
